Reaching 100,000 Units Shipped Proves Its Potential as Trade Post for the Northern Market.
On June 21, Pohang held a celebratory ceremony for reaching the 100,000th Mazda vehicle shipped from here to Russia at Yeongilman Container Port.
Yeongilman Port, after shipping 87,136 Mazda vehicles to Russia between September 2012 and last year, achieved the feat of reaching the 100,000nd unit through an extra shipment on this day.
It is believed that the occasion will mark an even higher possibility for the wharf to establish itself as specialist facility and hub for Russia-bound car export by securing consistent passage of Mazda goods despite sluggish logistics activity owing to the shrinking domestic and world economy.
The Russia-bound Mazda products are already assembled products that are shipped from Hiroshima to Yeongilman Port to go through KD (knock down) procedure. Then the parts are packed into containers and reassembled when they reach the local Mazda plant in Vladivostok to be sold across the Russian Federation.
Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “The plan is not to stop at the success we had today but to establish Yeongilman Bay as the optimum logistics station for the North East trade route and Pan- Pacific hub through careful and vigorous pursuit of infrastructure related projects such as immediate completion of adjoining industrial estate and rail connections inside the docking areas. I will try my best to bring new trade routes to Yeongilman Bay and accommodate as many logistics operatives as possible to enrich the logistical industry, which is sure to become a new source of revenue for Pohang’s economy alongside the established steel industry.”
